The initiative, which falls within the scope of strengthening animal health and knowledge about the main diseases affecting livestock on the island, is carried out in partnership with the Covets Association and has the support of the Biflores Association, Veterinarians Without Borders (Portugal), and others.

In statements to the media, veterinarian Lara Baptista, from the Covets Association, explained that the initiative involves a group of four external technicians and results from a collaboration between several national and international organizations.

According to the veterinarian, the main objective of this intervention is to identify the main difficulties existing in the municipality, namely in terms of knowledge about animal diseases and the scarcity of resources, through a detailed survey of the sanitary situation.

“We are visiting several breeders in different areas of the island to obtain a representative sample of the animals and practices used on the farms,” he explained, adding that samples are being collected for laboratory studies and the attitudes, knowledge, and practices of the breeders are being evaluated.

Lara Baptista also highlighted that this first phase will allow the collection of essential data that will serve as the basis for the development of an animal health plan adapted to the reality of Brava, with a view to reducing the incidence and transmission of diseases.

"The goal is, based on the test results and the understanding of local needs, to jointly develop practical solutions, which may often involve adopting simple but fundamental measures to improve animal health," he emphasized.

The official highlighted that the ongoing survey is an essential step to ensure more effective and sustainable interventions in the future, directly benefiting breeders and contributing to the development of the livestock sector on Brava Island.
